Adrift

…it was tempting, that dark encompassing quiet, and he had been tired for so long now and below him was nothingness.  He once thought of himself as something and that was innocence, but that was gone now.  He never was anything and so to sink into nothingness would be as natural as letting go.  He would not be missed.  Just gone.  There were thousands of fathoms of water below the keel and all that separated him from those depths was an inch and quarter thick planking that wept along the seams and butt ends.

He could hear them then, away in the mists rising, blowing out, breathing in, and diving again.  And they came alongside, each in turn, rolling and looking up on him with their infinite eyes, as deep and infinite as the night sky that looks outward to the universe. But with them the infinite lie inward, looking into the most ancient of knowledge that was contained therein, a knowing from beyond the time of man to a time of natural balance, that of which man had severed his ties long ago.  Theirs a portal into the collective memory, that of the hunters and the hunted, the leviathan which had witnessed from below the watery threshold the progression of man, the wars of man, the man that had hunted them to near extinction, man that harried along his own demise.  One by one they sank down below the waves of the sea having shared an intimacy only known to travelers meeting on a desert road.  They pursued their course, an their course was south by southwest.

book II

WHEN HE AWOKE, HE was at sea.  There was silence, save the slow rock and the pull on the rig.  A muted silence as a fog had settled on the water and dampened even the quiet lapping against the hull as the Home rode over the gentle passing swell

And so sets the scene for Jack Horton as he enters a journey into unknown waters and ports, and uncharted conflicts within his own healing as he battles storms, doldrums, and naturally his own inner voice to emerge into a place of deeper understanding as he seeks peace with his past trauma that is unveiled to the reader, bit by bit.
